Summer Reading Program
The purpose of this program is to ensure children, as well as adults, continue to read over their long summer break from school. For children and teens, Summer Reading helps to circumvent what we call “the summer slide,” a decline in reading and other academic skills during the summer break. Studies show that children who participate in Summer Reading initiatives score higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school than those who don’t. Reading has also been known to exercise the brain, increase concentration, reduce stress, improve sleep, and promote longevity. We make reading during the summer a fun, no-pressure activity by providing interactive programming, and incentives for reading throughout June and July.
A Place
New to the country? New to South Dakota? Or even just new to Aberdeen? Welcome! K.O. Lee Aberdeen Public Library understands that moving to a new place can be a lot of work, and their staff want to make that transition as easy as possible, and to make those new to the city comfortable and to feel like part of the community, that’s why K.O. Lee Aberdeen Public Library developed The A Place.
The A Place is a collection of materials, services, programs and classes, all designed to help Aberdeen newcomers feel comfortable in their new home. The library offers computers without timers, so people can take their time working on applications; a growing collection of foreign language books for all ages, bilingual staff, as well as cultural and educational programs designed to connect newcomers to Aberdeen while celebrating where they came from!
